What is The Alternative Four Days Marches?
During the Alternative Four Days Marches, you walk a route of your own choosing (5, 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50km) for four days, alone or in a small group (in accordance with the RIVM guidelines), using the Alternative Four Days Marches app which registers the kilometres you walked.
When is the Alternative Four Days Marches held?
The Alternative Four Days Marches will be held from 20 to 23 July 2021, the days on which the Nijmegen Four Days Marches would normally take place.
How can I register for The Alternative Four Days Marches?
You can register to participate in The Alternative Four Days Marches on www.dealternatievevierdaagse.nl.
Can anyone register?
Yes, anyone can register. There is no age limit, but we do advise you to choose a distance that suits your fitness level. Due to the corona pandemic, everyone walks their own route during this Alternative Four Days Marches, and we are not able to set up (medical) rest areas along the way. You walk at your own risk.
Why has it been decided to organise an alternative Four Days Marches after all?
Not only because it is healthy to keep moving, but especially to be able to experience the Four Days Marches feeling in 2021. Moreover, The Alternative Four Days Marches in 2020 was a great success.
Who organises The Alternative Four Days Marches?
The Alternative Four Days Marches is a collaboration between Stichting DE 4DAAGSE, Royal Dutch Walking Association (KWBN), and sports marketing agency House of Sports.
Can I participate in The Alternative Four Days Marches for free?
Yes, participation in The Alternative Four Days Marches is free. You can, however, opt for different packages with nice extras such as a medal and sports items. There are costs involved with these packages.
Is there a limit to the number of participants in The Alternative Four Days?
There is no draw for participation in The Alternative Four Days Marches, and anyone can participate.
Will I still receive a Four Days Marches Cross if I participate? / Do I get a reminder when I participate successfully?
It is not possible to earn the official Four Days Marches Cross upon completion of The Alternative Four Days Marches. The Cross is an official royally recognized reward, with accompanying rules for receiving it. But everyone can purchase a unique memento of this special alternative 'Four Days Marches 2021'. KWBN members receive the usual discount of € 1. A different memento is developed for the distances 30 kilometres and up than for the shorter distances of 5, 10, and 20 kilometres.
What are the starting times?
You can walk The Alternative Four Days Marches on and within any time of your choosing on the marching days. We do recommend that you take into account the weather conditions, and your chosen distance.
Which distances can I register for?
You can choose between 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50km. Of course, the app will also register any additional kilometres you walk. However, this is a voluntary choice at your own risk. The app registers your distance per day.
How can I determine my route?
The app registers the kilometres you walked.
Can I participate in a group?
We call on everyone to adhere to the guidelines of the RIVM, the national government, and/or the local government as they are in force from 20 to 23 July. This way we stay healthy together. Keep a close eye on the latest guidelines: https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/coronavirus-covid-19.
No. On the contrary, we call on everyone not to come to Nijmegen, but to walk in a different location in the Netherlands (or even abroad) to avoid overcrowding.
Do participants receive a stamp/punch card?
No. The app keeps track of your walking distance digitally. If you complete the distance you chose, you have reached your specified target. If you have completed the chosen distance on all four days, you have completed The Alternative Four Days successfully, and the app will indicate this.
What is the function of the new The Alternative Four Days Marches app?
The app registers the number of kilometres you walk. In addition, the app offers all kinds of fun and relevant hiking content. After The Alternative Four Days Marches, you can also use the app for other walking routes!
When and where can I download The Alternative Four Days Marches app?
The Alternative Four Days Marches app, in which you ultimately register your walks of The Alternative Four Days Marches, can be downloaded from the Play stores several weeks prior to The Alternative Four Days Marches (software versions iOS 13, 14 and Android 5+). Participants will receive a message about this by email on the address they used to register. Please note: each participant must use a unique email address. You cannot use one email address to register multiple people.

Can I register on the day of the start?
Yes, that is possible. As soon as you start, you need to have downloaded The Alternative Four Days app, and you will need to sign up. That is even possible on July 20. Please note: it is not guaranteed that you will be able to order a medal or T-shirt.
Is it possible to change my chosen distance at a later time?
You choose the distance you want to walk while registering. When you download the app, the distance you chose is automatically included. You need to walk at least the number of kilometres of your chosen distance in order to unlock the badge, and ultimately complete the Alternative Four Days Marches. Please note: it is not possible to receive a different medal than the one you ordered if you walk fewer or more kilometres. It is also not possible to change your distance in the app once you have started The Alternative Four Days Marches. Why are there two medals?
There is a unique medal for the distances 5, 10, and 20km, and a medal for the official Four Days Marches distances of 30, 40, and 50km. When registering you can order a medal of your choice.
Can I walk for a charity?
Every walker can link their participation in The Alternative Four Days Marches to their own sponsor campaign for a charity. We offer some tips on the website.
I did not order one a package when I registered. Can I order a medal or a package later?
Yes, the items can be ordered in the webshop subject to availability.
